What we learn from the Biosphere II project:
Biosphere 2 is an artificial closed ecological system, located in the desert of Arizona, which was built in the 1990s.
The project goal was to assess the feasibility of a space physically closed to the outside world, in which life would continue to prosper. Biosphere 2 refers to biosphere 1, Earth, and gift ambition to prepare for future space missions, in which we will be forced to reproduce ecosystems to survive.
His construction, valued at $ 200 million, made of Biosphere 2 the largest closed ecological system ever built today. It indeed contains an ocean, a desert, a rain forest, as well as agricultural land and habitat for the crew living there.
The particularity of the building is his tightness, which allowed during various missions to measure each air changes.
Two missions were carried out between 1991 and 1994, but both failed, first because of a critical rate of CO2 (fatal for the crew) and the second cause of tension in the crew.
Since 2007, the site belongs to the University of Arizona who continuously conduct experiments there.
