The construction that began in 2010 in eastern Russia is at the height of the Russian Space ambition.
The goal of this cosmodrome is taking over from the Baikonour Cosmodrome which existence since 1955, historic site of the space race, which is still the most active space launch of the planet.
But Baikonur is now a Russian enclave in Kazakhstan, and this is normal that the Russian government wants to reduce its dependence on the countrie of the former Soviet Union.
The project cost is currently estimated at 250 billion rubles ($ 5 billion). It prevents build and expand an entire city near the site, which will become a place of science and tourism (russia seriously considering offering tickets for tourist hotel in space).
Indeed, the site will have an airport, to accommodate aircraft from around the world but also potential spacecraft. One can imagine the Russian space shuttle, the Buran and other model aircraft in the image of SpaceShipTwo.
Russian President announced that the site would be ready to send the first manned space mission in 2018.
